There is a lot of stuff out on the interwebs, and as the cost is little to nothing other than time, I thought it would be brilliant to add to the mix.
It seems that somewhere between 40 and 70 there is a precipitous slide in internet usage, or deployment, in one’s personal life. Part of it is, I think that many of our friends are no so comfortable sharing every little mundane thing in our lives with friends, acquaintances and strangers. Some because we don’t use a computer in our everyday lives, some because we are just too busy living life to spend too much time in front of a screen, and some because it just seems overwhelming.
Personally, I grew up during a time when the PC was born. Between the Atari 400, the 8088, and a myriad of early starts and failures, my generation literally grew up during this transition from paper to chip. I graduated High School in 1977, the IBM 8088 was introduced in 1979, to provide you with a reference point.
Truth is that there is good reason many of us are overwhelmed and attempt to shut it all off. Data, information growth, is the fastest growing “thing” on earth. The words used to describe the amount of data are words never used – exabytes is what I understand the measurement used.
An Exabyte is approximately 1,000 Petabytes. Another way to look at it is that an Exabyte is approximately one quintillion bytes or one billion Gigabytes. There is not much to compare an Exabyte to. It has been said that 5 Exabytes would be equal to all of the words ever spoken by mankind. (thank you kk.org)
An article at kk.org entitled “The Speed of Information” tells us that in 2003 there were 3,5 exabytes of information created, with an annual growth rate of 66%. I have no idea what the current rate or amount is, but let’s just guess it is more.
I think you can see where I’m going. We are all pretty dim bulbs when measured against the available information in our world, let along the information created in 1 year.
So after living more than half of my life, I find myself overwhelmed at times with the current state of affairs. And this blog is my way of dealing with the awe, wonder, confusion, frustration, and the feeling that we are all drowning a bit or numbing ourselves from this onslaught, even if we don’t realize it.
